Hello, this is Chi-san.
I would like to introduce episodes and dishes related to your [Words from parents].
Chapter 4:
My Mom’s “Oden”
I absolutely love my mom’s oden, even though there’s no specific recipe for it.
Please enjoy the K san’s story!
【K san】
In our family, including my younger sister, we were brought up with the idea that,
“The report card isn’t ours (parents); it belongs to you.”
Our parents’ actions matched their words. Whether our test scores were good or bad, they didn’t make a big deal out of it.
As a child, I wished for praise when my test scores were good, but back then, it felt a bit distant. Looking back now, I think my parents were right.
Some parents may feel like their child’s achievements reflect their own,
but that’s not the case. It’s something the child should take responsibility for (in the future).
My mother used to say that children are entrusted to us by God. Children aren’t possessions of adults.
Right now, I have two teenagers, and I don’t think they’re as capable as their parents. But I want to support my entrusted children from behind, so they can become independent.
【Mother】
However, when it comes to my mother’s specialty in cooking, it’s a bit tricky.
That’s because my mother isn’t really skilled in cooking (though I can’t say that to her).
Even so, I absolutely love my mother’s oden!
But, I’ve asked her for the recipe before, and it’s what you might call a “set-it-and-forget-it” kind of cooking.
She starts by making a broth with kombu (kelp) and then lets it simmer for a long time. It includes common ingredients like daikon radish, carrots, pouches of ingredients, and bamboo shoots, all in larger sizes. The unique thing is that she includes eggs with their shells.
There are no recipes or photos to follow, but it’s my mother’s dish that I suddenly crave from time to time.
